An adventurer, Passepartout, ends up accompanying time-obsessed English gentleman, Phileas Fogg, on a daring mission to journey around the world. Fogg has wagered with members of his London club that he can traverse the world in 80 days. Along the way, they encounter many interesting 19th Century figures and have many exciting and suspenseful situations in their voyage around the world.

Jules Verne this is not. However what it lacks in authenticity, it makes up for in wit and energy. Through Steve Coogan, Fogg becomes a dilletante buffoon who&#39;s pushed into the circumnavigation by his valet Passepartout (Chan). This conceit effectively doubles the number of antagonists standing in the travellers&#39; way and gives ample opportunity for Chan to exercise his stock-in-trade martial artistry.<br/><br/>These two adjustments make for a fresh story, albeit in a hackneyed matinée: all pratfalls and comic kung-fu. Along with a surprisingly effective love interest (Cécile De France) it all seems to hang together fairly well. It is possible to be put off by the surfeit of random cameos though. Kathy Bates and even John Cleese are good add-ons; Macy Gray and the pre-election-payday-popup from Arnie are ugly. 4/10
that is: make another childish stunt filled movie with a silly plot. I never saw the original so I don&#39;t know how it compares, but it feels like this story should be a 10 hour mini-series on TV because there is too much to pack into 2 hours. First we have the introduction of the characters and then the bet to go around the world in 80 days. So they don&#39;t start the journey till 45 minutes in the movie. Then it&#39;s like little sketches thrown in and random places were picked like India, Istanbul, the US…<br/><br/>Arnold Swartsneger(sp?) has a funny cameo as a Prince that cares more about this statue of himself than anything else. And he actually tries to talk different but in spots his accent comes through.<br/><br/>Jackie Chan was the same ole same ole. It&#39;s like he&#39;s the same character every time.<br/><br/>FINAL VERDICT: I didn&#39;t think it was very good and don&#39;t recommend it for most people. Maybe a 10 year old would like it.
Just going through the motions here (and mild ones at that), both Chan and the movie should have stayed at home.
No. For the most part this is a film that draws loose inspiration from the Verne novel. A more faithful adaptation was made in 1956.<br/><br/>To name a few specific and obvious changes from the novel:<br/><br/>-In the film, Phileas Fog is an eccentric inventer who takes a bet for a position of auhority. In the book he was a recluse who spent most of his time playing cards and the bet was simply a sum of money.<br/><br/>-Passpartout in the book was much more open with Fog. He was being honest when he said he was French, and there was no sub-plot about him taking advantage of Fog to achieve a hidden agenda. Also in the film he is responsible for the bank robbery, despite having nothing to do with it in the book.<br/><br/>-While the bank robbery did happen in the book, it is given a larger role and serves as motivation for the characters. Lord Kelvin also pins it on Fog as an excuse to keep him from winning the bet. In the book, the robbery happened of-screen and had nothing to do the main characters. Inspector Fix only mistook Fog for the robber because his appearance matched the description he had been given of the actual criminal.<br/><br/>-In the film, Inspector Fix is depicted as a dim-witted officer who is manipulated by Kelvin. In the book, he was much more reasonable, having mistaken Fog for the robber based on his appearance matching the description. He also eventually helps Fog and releases him when he realizes his mistake.<br/><br/>-The love interest in the book was an Indian princess, not a French artist.
